What made my teeth change color in the first place?
Highly pigmented food and drinks like red wine, berries or coffee are some of the main culprits of stained teeth. Certain medications cause staining on the inner layer of the tooth, called dentin. The dentin is yellow in color and, as the outer, white enamel layer breaks down over time, begins to show through the enamel. Because of this process, tooth discoloration is linked to aging. Trauma to the tooth also causes staining. Additionally, using smokeless tobacco and smoking tobacco cause tooth discoloration and yellowing.
Is teeth whitening right for me?
If you feel as though your smile has lost its luster, you could benefit from teeth whitening. The whitening agents do not work on restorations made from porcelain, such as crowns or bridges and may cause uneven coloring after a whitening session. Therefore, people with unrestored teeth make the best candidates for teeth whitening. Additionally, your teeth and gums should be healthy and not require any dental procedures such as fillings or root canals. Some patients report some tooth sensitivity after a whitening session, but it usually resolves itself within a day.
How does teeth whitening work?
Whitening agents contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. On the molecular level, these chemicals break the bonds which hold together the stain’s molecules. This disperses the stain, giving your teeth a whiter appearance. During the procedure itself, your Pocono dentist places a whitening gel onto the teeth and aims a special UV light at it. Most whitening sessions are broken up into three 15-minute segments and take about an hour to complete.
