Always wanted to know a little more about these dental restorations? Well now you can!

No matter whether you are getting a dental crown from our Tannersville and Pocono, PA dentists--Dr. Jeffrey Wert, Dr. Jeremy Olen and Dr. Thomas Hart--or you’re just interested in dentistry, there is always more to learn about your dental care so that you can also make Crownsinformed decisions about your health. Plus, dental crowns actually are interesting restorations that can improve your smile. Here are just some fun facts about dental crowns.

Humble Beginnings

While you may think that dental crowns are a more modern dental restoration, you may be surprised to hear that they’ve actually been around for centuries. While crowns have certainly had a few makeovers over the years, the Etruscans were believed to be the first to create dental crowns back in 700 BC (the first porcelain crowns are believed to have been created in the mid-1800s).

Of course when you get a dental crown from our Tannersville and Pocono general dentist, you’ll be getting a much more modern and realistic-looking crown than anything you could ever get centuries ago.

Still Require Care

Even though your crown isn’t a real tooth structure and isn’t prone to cavities it will still need to be cared for just like a real tooth. In fact, you will need to brush and floss the tooth just like you will the rest of your smile to prevent plaque and foods particles from building up. After all, the last thing you want to deal with is a damaged or failed crown.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Even if you opt for a metal amalgam crown over porcelain you may get a couple more years of life out of your restoration, but dental crowns aren’t designed to last forever. They can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years or even longer, depending on how well you care for them, but at some point they will need to be replaced.

Whitening Won’t Work

If you have started to notice that your dental crown isn’t quite as vibrant at it used to be, you may be wondering if teeth whitening could boost your smile and your restoration. Unfortunately, professional teeth whitening is only designed to work on natural tooth enamel and not on artificial dental work. In this case, our Tannersville and Pocono restorative dentist can replace your dental crown with a newer, whiter one to match the rest of your whitened smile.

Change Your Diet

Even though dental crowns are very resilient, there are still certain foods you will want to avoid if you want to protect it from damage. This includes hard, sticky foods and chewing gum. We would be happy to talk to you about which foods are on the enjoy and avoid lists after getting a dental crown.
