There are benefits and drawbacks to replacing lost teeth with both crowns and bridges.
Whether you've lost a tooth from an accident or decay has taken its toll, it's important to get it repaired as soon as possible. If you are only replacing or restoring one or two teeth, your Pocono family dentist will likely suggest one of two common implements: a dental crown or a bridge. But what are the differences between the two, and the advantages and disadvantages unique to them?
Crowns vs. Bridges
Crowns are essentially caps that fit over your existing teeth. They are typically made of either gold or porcelain, depending on where in the mouth they will be placed. It is important to remember that there needs to be some remainder of the original tooth present in order to place a crown. Teeth that are too brittle or decayed to support a filling are good candidates for crowns.
The fundamental difference between crowns and bridges is that bridges are designed to fill in an existing gap from the loss of one or more teeth. These structures look similar to crowns, but are placed between two natural teeth acting as anchors.
Generally the two natural teeth on each side of the vacant area must have some sort of restorations present in order for them to support the bridge properly. However, if something goes wrong with the existing restorations after the bridge is placed, it will affect all the teeth involved - the two natural and the artificial ones in between. Even with no issues, bridges are only designed to last a decade or so.
Because crowns do tend to last longer than any other restorative dental implement, they tend to be more expensive. However, this does not guarantee that they are fail-safe. They can still be subject to cavities and other problems due to the natural tooth still being present in the mouth. There is also the risk of nerve damage, which can be painful and difficult to treat. To learn more about dental corwns visit our dental crowns page.
Your Pocono-area dental professional will be able to determine which restoration will best fit your unique case, providing the most comfortable and cost-effective option.
